Join us for our next Leadership Foundations series with a livestreamed fireside chat featuring Dr. Julia Filiberti Allen, entrepreneur and advisor at the intersection of business growth and deep tech. Moderated by Steve Riccio, executive director of the Burgess Institute, this conversation will explore lessons in leadership amassed over a diverse career in the military, academia, defense industry, and global fortune 500 settings. 

Whether you're an emerging leader or looking to deepen your leadership practice, this session will provide tools for identifying leadership skills gained from diverse fields and developing a path across intersectional areas.

Dr. Julia Filiberti Allen is an entrepreneur and advisor at the intersection of business growth and deep tech working with small businesses in the aerospace and defense industry. Prior to starting her advisory practice, she was the CTO of Saab, Inc., a Technical Area Director at BAE Systems FAST Labs, and member of the Senior Professional Staff at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Before entering the private sector, she served as a DoD SMART fellow as a federal government civilian and later as a Captain in the U.S. Army National Guard, where she commanded over 180 intelligence professionals. She is a trusted advisor across the defense R&D ecosystem and has served as a thought leader and panelist at key industry and government forums, including NDIA’s Emerging Technologies for Defense and the U.S. Chief Digital and AI Office’s Responsible AI in Defense Workshop. Julia is an Adjunct Professor at Purdue University, where she mentors graduate students in autonomy and AI. She holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, where her dissertation explored explainable AI and competency prediction in deep learning systems. She earned a M.S. in Applied & Computational Mathematics from the Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Mathematics from Dickinson College.  The daughter of a U.S. Army War College professor, Julia grew up in Carlisle and graduated from Carlisle High School, where she played basketball and tennis.

Steve Riccio, Ed.D., is the executive director of the Burgess Institute for the Global Economy and a senior lecturer in Dickinson’s Department of International Business & Management. Steve teaches courses including Fundamentals of Business, Human Resource Management, International Organizational Behavior and Profiles in Leadership, and he was selected by Dickinson’s class of 2023 as the recipient of the Constance & Rose Ganoe Memorial Award for Inspirational Teaching.

Steve has an extensive background in human resources and organizational development. Prior to joining Dickinson’s faculty in 2015, he served as the college’s associate vice president for human resource services. Steve is also a certified executive coach with 25 years of experience in the consulting industry, supporting client needs through strategy, human resources, organizational development and leadership coaching.
