As a founding partner of SHoP Architects, Chris is deeply engaged in advancing new models of building, with a particular emphasis on sustainable design and innovative materials such as bio-based systems. He champions process-driven innovation, including offsite manufacturing, to improve buildings’ efficiency and environmental performance.
Through real-world insights and reflection, Chris will offer a dynamic look at how leadership is practiced and navigated across contexts. He’ll touch on strategies you can use to develop ideas and practices in evolving fields and lead in new spaces while creating community through shared purpose.

Chris Sharples ’87 is a founding partner of SHoP Architects, a renowned firm based in New York City that is dedicated to designing innovative buildings and public spaces that enrich urban life. Alongside his identical-twin brother, Bill, and three other co-founders, Chris has helped shape SHoP’s reputation for excellence over the past two decades.
Chris’s expertise spans a wide range of landmark projects, including the Uber headquarters in San Francisco, the Domino Sugar master plan, Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the National Veterans Resource Center at Syracuse University. He and Bill lead the firm’s work on U.S. embassies and diplomatic facilities around the world, reflecting Chris’ focus on architecture that serves the public realm. Currently, Chris is deeply engaged in advancing new models of building and process-driven innovations that improve the efficiency and environmental performance of buildings.
In addition to his professional achievements, Chris is committed to education and has taught at institutions such as Yale University, Columbia University (where he earned his master’s in architecture with honors in 1990), Cornell University, Parsons School of Design and the University of Virginia. Through lectures and teaching, he shares SHoP’s philosophy, which unites technological exploration, artistic inspiration and public responsibility—helping to inspire the next generation of architects around the globe.
