Webinar: Fins, Fossils and Foreign Terranes - The Natural History of the San Juan Islands, Washington

Join Marcus Key, Joseph Priestley Professor of Natural Philosophy, and learn about the natural history of Washington's stunning San Juan Islands. We’ll explore how the islands were made by foreign terranes accreted onto the western edge of North America and how multiple glacial scouring left these islands surrounded by salmon-hunting killer whales.

Fins, Fossils and Foreign Terranes: The Natural History of the San Juan Islands, Washington
Wednesday, March 4
Noon (Eastern time)

This free webinar is open to all alumni and their guests who are curious about science and the wildlife and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. It's also a perfect introduction to Dickinson’s Alumni Global Adventure, Pacific Northwest Discovery—The San Juan Islands, Whales, Wildlife and Coastal Culture, led by Professor Key August 3-8, 2026.

During the trip, we’ll experience the raw beauty of one of North America’s most spectacular marine ecosystems in a way that few travelers ever do. We'll explore the rugged coastlines of remote islands and the tranquil beauty of old-growth forests. Each day will unfold with extraordinary wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes and unique learning opportunities.

If you can’t join us at this time but would like to watch a recording of the webinar, please register for the event; the recording will be sent to you afterwards.

Please register for the webinar by Monday, March 2. Your confirmation email will include the Zoom link.
