Leadership Foundations with Doug Pauls '80

Join us for our next installment of Dickinson's Leadership Foundations series with a livestreamed fireside chat featuring Doug Pauls ’80 and led by Emily Kelahan, associate professor of philosophy.

This dynamic webinar is designed for anyone interested in leadership in a time of crisis. What counts as a crisis? How do you know if you’re in one? What do you do as a leader when one arises? What shapes do crises take across various domains of leadership and life? What lessons do they offer?

2–3 p.m. Eastern time

Through real-world insights and reflection, this session will offer a dynamic look at how leadership is practiced and navigated in crisis.

Doug Pauls ’80 served on Dickinson's board of trustees from 2008 to summer 2026. As a Dickinson student, he majored in economics and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, Raven’s Claw and the men’s basketball team.

Doug served as chief financial officer of BankUnited, Inc., a bank holding company, from 2009 until his retirement in 2013. From 2008 to 2009, he served as executive vice president of finance for TD Bank, NA following TD Bank’s acquisition of Commerce Bancorp, Inc. in March 2008. Prior to that, he held several positions with Commerce Bancorp, including serving as its chief financial officer from 2002 until the acquisition by TD Bank and its chief accounting officer from 1995 to 2002. Earlier in his career, he was a senior manager in the audit department of Ernst & Young in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pa. He has been a director of BankUnited, Inc., and BankUnited, N.A., since 2014.

Emily Kelahan’s research and teaching interests lie in roughly two areas: the history of early modern philosophy (1550-1800) and the philosophy of work (What is work? How is it different from play, leisure, labor and other related concepts? What is the place of it in a flourishing human life?). What both of these areas have in common is that they allow her to engage in a variety of sub-disciplines at once. She likes to pose and attempt to answer tough questions that lie at the intersection of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics and social philosophy.
